Most people are familiar with the nine-candle menorah utilized during the festival of lights known as Chanukkah. What most do not know is that the very first menorah created, and the most sacred menorah, had only seven candles.
The Bible states unequivocally that its design was inspired from “on high” and this menorah was fashioned for the Tabernacle of the Wilderness upon the precise instructions that Moses received from God (Exodus. 26:31-40). The Jewish historian Josephus (37CE-100CE) and the Jewish philosopher and theologian Philo of Alexandria (15BCE- 45CE) both recorded the seven flames as symbolizing the sacred seven planets. This seven-branched object is so revered the Talmud forbids manufacturing them for any other purpose than temple rituals. Traditionally, the celestial aspect of sacred objects is not unique. The heavens of both day and night have always played an important part in religious rites around the world.
One example is how world cultures still celebrate the Winter Solstice much as our ancestors did for thousands of years. It has merely been disguised as Chanukkah, Ramadan, Kwanzaa, and Christmas.
